If you’re a bride, getting your makeup just right on the big is probably towards the top of your to-do list. Makeup can do amazing things, but the most flawless look will come from having a smooth canvas to begin with (and by canvas, we mean your skin!). Start ahead of time and focus on getting flawlessly smooth skin before the big day with these 10 easy steps.
1. Cleanse and Exfoliate
AHA Exfoliating Cleanser
The right cleanser can make all the difference. However, what many people don’t realize is that exfoliating your skin is the key to effective cleansing.
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells. When you wash your face without exfoliating you’re not actually reaching your skin. The dead skin cells get in between your face and your cleanser. As a result, your face doesn’t get fully cleansed.
For a real, proper clean, you need to exfoliate your skin first. If you’re short on time, however, (and who isn’t?), try a two-in-one cleanser that contains an exfoliate, like SkinAgain’s AHA Exfoliating Cleanser.
2. Hydrate and Skip the Milk
Water, it’s the source of all life. It’s also the key to beautiful, healthy looking skin. Proper hydration ensures that your skin maintains its resiliency and prevents it from becoming dried out. Drinking water also improves blood flow which gives your skin that rosy glow.
If you suffer from acne, experts recommend staying away from milk. Although no one is really sure why milk causes breakouts, several studies have shown that those who drink milk are 30% more likely to have acne.
3. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
Dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli and fruits like bananas and berries are rich in antioxidants. The antioxidant properties of these foods help to fight inflammation and wrinkles, while also protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.
Antioxidants work by causing your body’s natural repair systems to work faster and by helping to prevent future damage. They directly interfere with the cell altering effects of free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidation, the process by which oxygen damages the way your cells function. Antioxidants, therefore protect your skin from the effects of free radicals. They also help to stimulate tissue growth, a process which also helps lessen the signs of aging.
4. Moisturize and Accessorize
You need to moisturize. A lot. Twice a day, minimum. And don’t buy just any moisturizer.
If you have oily skin and are prone to breakouts, you need an oil-free moisturizer, preferably one with a mattifier and salicylic acid like SkinAgain’s Clear Blemish Control Mattifying Lotion. It’s important, however, that you choose wisely when selecting a product that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is highly prized in blemish products because it reduces skin blemishes. However, it tends to dry out your skin. As a result, your skin ends up producing more oil and the product become counter-effective. This is why when selecting a product that contains salicylic acid, it’s important that it incorporate time-release technology. The Clear Blemish Control Mattifying Lotion distributes tiny bursts of salicylic acid to your skin throughout the day. This prevents your skin from becoming dried out and producing excess oil.
When you go out, consider accessories that protect your skin from the sun, (even in winter months). Hats and sunglasses will help your face to retain its moisture by reducing your skin’s exposure to the drying rays of the sun.
5. Trade in Your Coffee for Tea
Coffee is a diuretic and can cause dehydration which leads to dry, flaky skin. Green tea, on the other hand, is your skin’s best friend. The tea has anti-inflammatory properties which helps to reduce redness and its medicinal components have been found to prevent collagen loss.
6. Stress Less
This is a tall order, especially when you’re a bride. However, stress is one of the leading causes of oily skin and acne breakouts. When you get stressed your cortisol levels rise, decreasing your body’s ability to fight off the bacteria that causes acne.
7. Be Aware of Sun Exposure Indoors
A lot of people don’t realize that UV rays can penetrate through windows. This means that your skin can be exposed to the sun, even when you’re at home or in your car.
To keep your skin from getting brown, wrinkled or sun damaged, you need to be aware of the sun at all times. Install a sunshade in your car, wear a headscarf, slather on the sunscreen—whatever you need to do to keep your skin away from the sun’s searing gaze. This goes for cloudy and rainy days as well. Clouds, like your windows, don’t stop the sun’s penetrating, skin destroying, rays.
8. Switch Your Toothpaste
Tartar-control and flavored toothpastes are great for your teeth but bad for your skin. The flavor additives and ingredients for tartar-control have been known to cause a skin condition called perioral dermatitis.
Perioral dermatitis can look like pimples and causes reddening and scales around the mouth. If this occurs, get antibiotics to treat and then switch to a plain-tasting toothpaste that advertises cavity control rather than tartar-control.
9. Choose Oil-Free Hair Products
A lot of shampoos and conditioners contain oil. As you lather up your hair, the oil from these products can get onto your skin and clog your pores. Even when you’re being extra careful, the oil can be transferred from your hair to your skin via sweat. To avoid this problem, simply switch out your oil shampoo and conditioner for a water-based lather.
The term ‘beauty sleep’ isn’t figurative. There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep for clear, beautiful skin. This is because while you sleep your skin is able to repair and recover from the day’s activities. As your body rests, your skin’s collagen is replenished which helps to prevent the appearance of wrinkles. Blood flow is increased which boosts the color and brightness of your skin and clears away the dark circles from under your eyes.
